CHOOSING A LANDSCAPING CALGARY COMPANY
Finding a good landscaping company in Calgary means you need to spend some time doing some research. If you are going to put your property in the hands of a landscaping company you need to know they will do a good job for a competitive price. You also need to know they will show up after agreeing to a scheduled start date.
Don’t pay a deposit
Many landscaping companies will ask you for a down payment on your landscaping before they have even started. There is one thing to remember regarding the payment of deposits in Alberta. Companies are not legally allowed to ask you for a payment unless they have a bond with the Alberta Government and they have been approved to accept deposits. This applies to all trades in Alberta and it is designed to protect the homeowner from shady companies who ask for a deposit and never return. Depsite this law, there are a number of unregistered landscaping companies who ask for deposits and/or progress payments before the landscaping job is finished. If your interested in a certain landscaping company ask them if they require a deposit before you enter into an agreement with them.
Check out insurance, WCB coverage, and licensing
There are many reputable landscapers in Calgary but there are also a number of landscaping companies who do not carry liability insurance or are not properly licensed. There are also companies who do not bother to register with the WCB and therefore are not covered should one of their employees be injured on your property. Did you know that should a worker be injured while working on your property you could be liable for there health care or rehablitation ? Yes, it is true, if the company you hired does not have liablilty insurance. Not having WCB also says something about the company who does not bother to cover their employees for accidents. Liablity insurance is very important for a landscaper to have. The insurance covers them should damage occur to you property. Most reputable landscapers will have over 1 million in liablity insurance. Also be sure to check and see if your landscaper is licensed to work in the city of Calgary. Simply ask your landscaper for the above documents to prove their coverage. Landscaping companies who carry insurance and who are licensed will be more than happy to prove it to you.
BBB Rating ?
The Better Business Bureau has a handy rating system for the public to use to verify the business they are considering using. The rating system goes from A+ to F The rating changes depending on how many complaints the company has recieved, if complaints have been resolved, and how many years they have been in business. Checking with the BBB is an important step in choosing a landscaper. Click here to see an example of a BBB rating.
Ask for references
If a company has a number of happy customers they should easily be able to provide you with names and numbers. We would suggest you take down an address as well and drive by a property that has been installed by your prospective landscaper. Make a call or two takes very little time, and it could save you a lot of time and money down the road. You can also search for reviews or references on line. Google reviews is a good place to start. Also check out on line reviewers like HomeStars these are independant companies that check out references to make sure they are legitimate.
